    Hi,
Very excited to finally see this game released. Many thanks for everyone's hard work on this project.
The game looks beautiful and plays great, but I seem to have 2 problems.
The display is very dark, so I've had to increase the gamma to +7. The setting does not stick though and resets every time I restart the game.
There is no setting in the knightlore.ini file for gamma.......

I have no sounds either...no music, no FX, nothing.
    Windows XP 32bit SP3. ASUS P5B Deluxe. 4GB DDR2 800MHz RAM. Nvidia GTX8800. Creative EMU 404 PCI soundcard. DirectX 9 Feb 2010 edition.

    Well done!!!

The game is awesome - lovely graphics, sound and music. Still getting the hang of it, it's difficult, but in a good way!

The only problem I have is the same as software junkie - it starts out very dark, and I have to reset gamma for each time I load it up. But I have no sound problems on mine.

    Allaround an excellent job!

Ah - seems I missed the gamma setting. I'll make a new download as soon as I've got time (got alot on at work right now). A patch will take longer though. Watch the news section on the main page for updates.

As for the sound - I've never seen any issues yet so I wouldnt know where to start looking. It uses directx by default. What results do you get with dxdiag (start, run, dxdiag)?

Thanks for your response. My sound issues have been fixed. I ran the dxdiag and changed my acceleration settings from "basic" to "full".
Once the gamma issues are fixed, this will be fantastic.
    Love the shadows....excellent work!

    Thanks

The Intel G31 and G33 chipsets are part of their express range. As mentioned in the readme file, these will not work because they do not support hardware T&L (transform and lighting).

Basically what this means is that they do not support vertex shaders (despite having pixel shader support). Most bog-standard directx apps will use whats called the fixed function pipeline so you might not see an issue, but many more will not run and I'm afraid Knight Lore is one of them.

I have intel graphics on my laptop and I tried every trick under the sun (and the moon) to try and get Knight Lore working on it - not a saussage :(

In my personal opinion, Intel should stick to what they do best which is making CPUs.

I'm trying to fix the problem using 3d-analyze that emulates many features of a graphic card such as TLC. I've checked TLC hardware emulation but without results...
Any chance to use that piece of software to solve the problem?

I tried 3d-analyze as well as another similar program (cant remember the name of it) but I couldnt get it working either. Let me know if you have any more success.

I'm not sure but I have a sneaky suspicion that it might be a CPU / DirectX issue. If the hardware vertex processing flag in the caps isnt set, then it defaults to software which uses a specialised set of CPU instructions (SSE / 3DNow!). It would be fair to assume that the cheaper RISC versions of the processors dont have those instructions. If it's a laptop then this is almost certainly the case. I'm also guessing the caps emulation doesn't take this into account.

Conclusion: blame lies squarely with whoever built the computer. Budget graphics without hardware T&L and failure to provide the necessary CPU alternative = 1 cost-cutting measure too far and a computer that is pretty much useless for gaming.

Many thanks for the superb games on this site - I've particularly loved HoH and Alien 8.

Would have loved to be able to play Knight Lore too, but sadly my PC has the 'shader' problem. I'm also unfortunately not very computer literate!

I'm going to need to buy a new PC fairly soon, and I'm wondering if the problem will be there with any 'Intel' PC?

Does anyone perhaps know a list of manufacturers/processors where this won't be a problem.

Alternatively, I presume there is no prospect of a 'fix' for this issue!

Thanks again, and keep up the great work.

Its the graphics card thats the essential piece of hardware here. Make sure its Nvidia or ATI. Avoid Intel graphics like the plague (but intel processors are good).

Hello. After a long time away from Spectrum gaming, I decided to replay this old game, which had been one of my favorites ZX Spectrum games, using the ZXSpin emulator, and within 2 days I managed to finish game with a "Percentage of Quest Completed 98%", "Overall Rating: Adventurer". To be able to finish game in such little time, I made intensive use of emulator Snapshots. Now I'd like to play the remake with the goal of reaching a "Percentage of Quest Completed" of 100%, in the remake I think this is equivalent to the "Rooms explored" parameter.

I just tried the remake and I like the graphics, the shadows, the sounds and the music. I agree with what was said here about the gamma setting, many rooms in the game look too dark, which makes it hard to see the details, in my opinion the default gamma setting should be higher, and the game should retain customized gamma value when exiting and restarting program. As opposed to the original Spectrum game, I didn't find a 'Pause' key in the remake, it'd be useful if there was one, I tried Keyboard 'Pause/Break' key with no result. It also would be nice to add the option to save game. That would be a relevant or even necessary feature for people who doesn't have the time to play long gaming sessions, or for those who just "die a lot", and would prefer not to restart game from the beginning when they loose all the lives!

Pressing escape pauses the game - just say no to the abort prompt to resume (no-brainer).

Save game = cheat. There wouldnt be much point in a high score table if everyone could just reload would there? The whole point of games like these is the challenge. Take that away and what youre left with is the equivalent of a silent movie ;)

And if you think this is a long gaming session you havent played Wizball - now THAT's a long gaming session (unless youre one of those players who "dies alot") ;)

OK, Peter. You made a good point as I didn't know there was a online high score table!

Yes, until now "I die a lot" but I'm hoping that as I get more practice, I will die less and less, and eventually be able to finish the game. In the end of one of my attempts, I was surprised to see that the game requested me to enter my name to figure in the high score table, saying that I was in position #409 in ranking. I immediately looked in the site for the online high score table, and found it at http://retrospec.sgn.net/allhighscores/kl and searched it for the name I entered in my game (PORTHUS), but I found it at position #351, not #409 as I expected. How could this be? I could understand if it descended in the table (as with time, others may achieve higher scores than mine), but I don't know how it can ascend in the table. Moreover, what is the GMT of the Data column? I ask this because at my local time, I entered my nickname at 2010-07-06, but the data which appears to the right of my nickname is 2010-07-07.

Really pleased to see this - Knight Lore is absolutely my favourite game of all time on any platform! First thing I did ten years ago when I bought my first computer was download a Spectrum emulator so I could play it again. Are you planning a Mac version, as with Head Over Heels and Alien8? Hope so. Cheers guys.

Only time will tell. The source had been made is available to anyone wishing to do a conversion (it will be released publically at a later date). The fact that is is written in Delphi and uses DirectX might put some people off though.

    Moved post by SteveS:

Pixel shader problem so can't play at minute but, before I sort this out, does this game have the single 'pick/jump' key function as per your excellent Alien 8 download. Have used other downloads for KL that do not have this function so game play is almost impossible due to instantaneous response of modern keyboards not allowing pick and jump with 2 keys. The old speccy response time, of course, allowed time to make a cup of tea between pick and jump.

Yes, Knight Lore has a jump / inventory key (got the idea from Iggy's A8 remake in fact).

Many thanks for the reply - only need to sort out that ***** pixel shader problem now and I can, at last, play my favourite game from many moons ago.

Fantastic remake - after a lengthy gaming night I managed to finish the game (I would love to see mire mare made heheh) and remember from my old speccy gaming days theres easier and harder ways to round up all the bits you need, and after a while it all came flooding back.

Feedback I can give is that the game play is fantastic - and manages to update without killing the addictive qualities of the original. 2 things stand out however. The jellies were never that viscous and could do with slowing down just a little, and most importantly the game geometery in the room where there is a knight and 2 portcullis gates is slightly out. On the original speccy game you could pass by the knight under the open portcullis immediately to the right or left of the knight without getting killed. This seems to be impossible on this version making this room very hard instead of very easy, which is important when planning a route. This pretty well makes a start from the south east corner of the map (the 2 door start) an instant restart. (dug out my speccy original to double check both of these points) These minor points aside - good job on a great conversion.

The only problem I have is the same as software junkie - it starts out very dark, and I have to reset gamma for each time I load it up. But I have no sound problems on mine.
