What a triumph, probably the best remake EVER to date! I might be bias, being a member of Retrospec, but hey when something is this good, you have to let everyone know!!!Posted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM

Fantastic!!
BUT if i choose music other than Late, when Head jumps i get a repeated jumping noise continously which gets louder and louder the more i jump! Running under XP Pro. Anyone else had this problem?Posted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM -
I just wanted to say what a wonderful, fantastic job everyone has done with Head Over Heels. The game was always one of my favorites, and this updated remake is absolutely exquisite. It is precisely and exactly what I would want in an updated version of the original game, from the music and sounds to the look of the art, and of course the overall feel and play of the game. Frankly, I am bowled over by the excellence of the work here. I want to say a very huge thank you to the team, and share my total pleasure at what they have achieved. Simply top notch all the way; perhaps the best remake of a game I have ever seen. Thank you!

Thanx for all the great comments !!! :) We appretiate it greatly.
About the sound not working - I have had a couple of people saying that there is something wrong with the sound on the XP systems. I cannot reproduce it though - using XP myself ... I would say it must be something with the drivers or allegro music routines :( Maybe you can try installing newest versions of sound card drivers or direct X ? I hope it can remedy the problem.
Best regards,

Okay will try different sound drivers this evening. Its been a while since they were updated!
Btw what sound card do you have in your system?Posted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM -
I have tested on 5 different systems. Two of them have built-in sound on motherboard (AC97 drivers), one system has AWE32 ISA board (very old), two systems have SB LIVE! 32 cards.
All worked with standard windows drivers ...Posted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM -
first of all, excuse me for my english but i speak french and i live in belgium
i wanted to tell you that you made a very great job, the new version of head over heels is wonderful (i played this game the first time on my amstrad cpc. it was one of my favourite games!)
i'd like to ask you two things:
-did you plan to remake other games? (if yes, please, tell me)
-I know, that it is not glorious, but is there a cheat for head over heels? (bcoz it is as hard as the original) or at least a savegame function???
that's all i stop boring you.
Thank you very much for all that fun you bring to me!
bye

Yep, I plan to make more remakes. I am not sure what to do next... Saboteur Returns is waiting to be finished, altough I don't have a graphics artist for it yet. Then there are other projects, one of which will be announced in a week or two - again looking for a graphician.
About the game, yes, there is a CHEAT mode, but if I tell it here then noone will play it properly anymore. Also there is a SAVE game facility - you just need to pickup a FISH and you have one save game to use...Posted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM -
may i help you? i am graphic designer, i know very well photoshop, illustrator,... but it is not the same way to create a poster with a lot of layers and transparency or to create pixel-art. and of course i don't know anything about coding :o)
thanks for the saving option, i found it yesterday evening after reading your notice. In your great goodness and to protect my little brain to boil, you can send me the cheat by mail :o) david.dv@skynet.be

Add me to the list of people who'd like a cheat option. Disable the high-scoring if you want, I don't care, but the limited saves is a little _too_ retro for me.Posted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM

Excellent job guys!!! Head Over Heels is one of the best games ever, with unrivalled playability.
I would like to finish this game, but I don't have the time to invest for it, nor the patience, nor the ability.
So, perhaps, you should consider a straightforward saving system (saving it any time, not just after picking a save bonus), or maybe give us some cheats.Posted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM -
Head on to http://www.remakes.org and there you can download a cheat. Wasn't done by me, but it is very nice !Posted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM

A short message to add my thankyou to the already other numerous ones. Superb remake, which captures all the feel of the original (I used to play it on Amstrad) with nice additions, excellent playability, great graphics, I'm at a loss for words. I spent the last days playing it and unfortunately (for me) I have now completed it... This is really how the retro bliss feels at its best!Posted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM

All files in Mac OS X port documentation folder are garbage. I downloaded the BeOS version to get a valid Docs folder.
Thank you.Posted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM -
Sorry for the messed up docs in MacOSX install. The install is now corrected. Don't really know what happend there... very strange :(Posted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM

The game You have re-made is just fantastic... The original one was wonderful..But that, what You, guys did, is just....Cannot find a proper word.
It is better than the original, and since I am a "8-bit fan" - it means a lot =).
HOH Remake is now among my favourite "best-ever" games.
I enjoyed it very, very much.
I've noticed that it is not exactly, as the original one. Sometimes it is harder, sometimes not.
Generally - more challenging than the original game. Which is good for me.
The idea with limited saves is brilliant. <<To anybody who would like free-saving, cheats, or that kind of stuff...DON'T DO THAT - you will spoil the game...It is not that hard - just needs some practice>>.
Music is really cool. What I think You could do in the future, is adding different tunes to all 5 worlds. Just a thought...I think it would be nice.
Good that you made Head jump straight up(without a move forward). It makes some places easier. But, on the other hand - I think he leaps not that far as he did. It was much easier to jump over mines (or toasters) in the original game.
Game is almost flawless - no errors, no bugs - goes smoothly. Yet from time to time the game freezes for a short while (usually then I die =). But it might be the problem with my computer, not the game itself.
There is one thing, I can possibly call a bug (but You probably know about it)...After collecting the fifth crown both Head and Heels become totally invulnerable. Yet, if after that, one should find a pink Bunny (giving invulnerability). The total "emperor's" invulnerability will wear off (as the effect of Bunny does). So - after collecting the last crown - it is better to stay away from those bunnies since they can make Head or Heels back vulnerable.
But, as I said. The game is perfect for me...even with that little...something.
You did a fantastic job!!!!
oh, and one more thing...Is it possible to get the score of 100%?
Or 99% and 275 rooms visited is the highest?Posted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM -
Great job. I havent played the original, but I like this a lot.
One question... when you fall down with heels to a room with moving enemies you just get killed over and over again. This happens to me in the beginning of the game, so head isn't there to do something about it. well, I wonder if this is one of the things that meke this game hard and therefore supposed to be so, or really a odd behaviour of the game.
Thanks for any clarifying, and keep up the good work!Posted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM -
Guys, just got to tell you that you have brought the best game I have ever played back to life. I spent ages playing this and watching my bro on it and this is just great. The saves idea is brilliant.
I have one question, where is the last crown cos im going out of my mind!!!

First off - this remake ROCKS!
I played the original on the Amstrad CPC6128 and I loved it then, and I was bowled over to find someone had taken the time and the care to update this game so beautifully (and make a MacOS X version too!), so KUDOS to the whole team!
I had not realised the subtle differences, i.e. Head's jump now being straight up without a forced forward movement, until I read them on here.
The only thing I would improve about this remake is to re-include some of the original kooky sounds, like the Egyptian tune that played at the start of Egyptia.
That being said, you guys have done awesome work here!
Okay. Here we go. I am lame. In Egyptia, after the first fish, you have to separate Head and Heels. The room Heels enters after separation is necessary is bugging me silly. I cannot get Heels to jump off the first exploding block onto the one above it. I have tried 1001 variations with no luck!
I even downloaded an RZX replay file which ran in my Spectrum emulator to try and watch how it is done, but I cannot recreate that jump successfully. Does anyone know whether it is possible, or if it is a bug, or what?
THANKS!
Having FUN with this game :-)
NickPosted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM -
Ok, it is simpler as on zx version, but a bit different. When you jump on the block that explodes you still have some time left to actually turn around and walk a few pixels in that direction and then JUMP. I.e. while the block is dissapearing you can still move around on it and then jump - this way you will make it up to the next block !
Best regards,

Hmm, I am not telling whats the biggest room count, might be something hidden somwhere ? Anyway, about the last crown - it is in Blacktooth castle, guarded by the emperor's guardian which will be scared if you are brave enough ;-)
TCPosted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM -
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I found only 276 rooms in the datafile: the usual 275 + the opening "retrospec" animation. I don't think it's reachable from the standard game rooms, although I managed to visit it by my own means :)
The displayed percentage is computed relative to this 276 from the datafile, so visiting all 275 rooms gives 275/276 which is truncated to 99%.Posted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM -
Only Head can pass through that room. You will need to bring Heels around through some other rooms ! Hint- it is the huge moonbase room with two robots !
About the room count - you hacked the encryption password for the dat file ? Not a nice thing to do ;-) But I knew some1 will do that oneday. What can I say.. a bug in room counting....
TCPosted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM -
>you hacked the encryption password
Not only that ;-) I also built an utility to change every single element of the saved game files plus some VERY handy functions such as swaping head/heels, calling one to meet the other etc :-)
Your Allegro framework made it so easy (sign of some pretty good job, I think). This tool is even probably easily portable thanks to the Allegro toolkit.
For me, it's yet another part of this game's fun. It's not only a wonderful port, it's also the pleasure to enjoy the great job you all did. Thank you!Posted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM -
I'm afraid my poor english is not enough to thank you for the grrrrrreeeat job you've done with this remake!
I played the original in an Amstrad PCW8256 ages ago, and I've been looking for the way to emulate it on my mac for years. I couldn't believe it when I knew there was a full-native Mac OS X remake!
Lots of thanks for that! And hey, keep bringing MAc OS X portings! :)Posted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM -
Unending thanks for taking the time to produce Head Over Heels for OSX.
I was 13 when I first played this classic (on my Amstrad CPC464 I think?)
I'm sure your heads are already big enough from all the praise you've received about this brilliant re-make of a brilliant game.
Anyway, apart from thanking you all, my other reason for posting a message here was to ask if you had any plans to produce a remake of the 'Batman' game which was almost identical to Head Over Heels in style (3D isometric) and was probably produced by the same people who made HoE. If I remember correctly, the Batman game preceded HoE and the aim was to collect all the parts of the Batmobile from around the Batcave (although the eventual reconstucted Batmobile looked more like a hovercraft I seem to recall!)
Keep up the amazing work.Posted 19 years ago #Login to Send PM
