Knight Lore was the first isometric adventure. It boasted great gameplay, lovely graphics and smooth animation. I would also add that it is one of the greatest games of our time.

This is a game that on paper doesn't add up:

  • The object of the game is rather simple and repetitive: visit the wizard and see what object he wants, collect the item and place it in the cauldron. Repeat 7 times and you have finished
  • The number of graphics in the game are very low
  • There are very few unique rooms
  • The puzzles are linear, largely unengaging and repetitive
  • There is no difference in abilities between sabreman as a man and sabreman as a wulf (bar some sprites do not like the wulf)

Despite this, the game is fantastic. You can spend hours just wandering around. Perhaps its the memory of what it represented that makes it special? I would prefer to say that the sum of the individual parts do not represent the whole.

Everything feels just right, from the minimal sound effects to the fairytale graphics.

Historically, it is one of the games mentioned at the end of Underwurlde and Sabrewulf, along with Pentagram and the unmade/unfinished Mire Mare.

Legend has it that this was finished before Sabrewulf. Check out the facts page :)

the wizard`s older now than all
his help you seek within this wall
for forty days your quest may last
locate the potion, make it fast
this hideous spell upon your soul
to lose its hold must be your goal
beware, the traps from here begin
the cauldron tells what must go in
to break the curse and make the spell
to save yourself and make you well.
