Pentagram was the last of the filmation games to be released. A few more adjustments were made to the file format, including the reversal of some of the bad ideas implemented in the Alien 8 format and the introduction of some bizarre memory wasting techniques! The goal was similar to Knight Lore and Alien 8, but in two stages:
Pentagram should be the best of the three: lovely graphics, more rooms, free roaming enemies to hinder your path, a more engaging story and a series of tasks to perform. Indeed Crash at the time gave it 93% stating, "I don't think you'll get bored" and "it presents better value for money than their other releases". Yet Sinclair User were more critical, "the backgrounds lack imagination", "the monsters are distinctly disappointing". Sadly, I tend to agree with Sinclair User. This is a shame because out of the three it holds the most promise. Ideal then, for a remake ... The reasons behind its poorness are best found by reading the Sinclair User review. Personally, the free roaming objects were annoying, the puzzles required more luck than skill and the design distinctly flat. Sinclair User best put it by saying, "the laziness that seems to underlie the game ... looks like some poor minion has been handed Ultimate's Graphic Adventure System, shown Knight Lore, and told to deliver a game by Friday" If only they they knew - check out the facts page :) |
and silvery waters drawn forth from the well did quench the ravages of time. Decay dissolved, they point to the stars proud and sharp and new. Two you will find and thence, two more, all charmed with the magical dew. Across them you will find the PENTAGRAM, its form will become as solid as rock for all to see. The Runes must you learn and glean, their place in Magic and in this land will they find without aid and the PENTAGRAM will be yours.
